To say Roger Goodell had a 2014 to forget is an understatement. Last year was one long string of public relations nightmares for the him, most notably the Ray Rice domestic violence saga.

Elevator Scandal Rocks Goodell, NFL

Goodell endured constant criticism for his handling of that incident. His original suspension of Rice was an absurdly light two games. He then suspended the running back indefinitely after actual footage of Rice hitting his wife emerged. Whether or not Goodell had obtained the video (or undertaken the necessary efforts to obtain it), has been a major point of controversy for the league.

Things got so bad over the summer that many speculated Goodell would lose his job over the fiasco. Now at least one prominent NFL owner is coming to the beleaguered commissioner's defense.

New York Giants owner John Mara, who oversaw the recent Mueller report investigation with Steelers owner Art Rooney, voiced his support for Goodell on WFAN sports radio Wednesday. He also acknowledged the man has made some mistakes.

Questions Abound Concerning Goodell's TIME Nomination

"No question he's been damaged by recent events," Mara said, via TMZ Sports. "He's a pretty strong person and he can get by this and I think he can repair his reputation." Mara added that he thought Goodell's overall body of work is "exceptional," despite this more recent snafu.

Many might still agree to disagree, Mr. Mara.
