Max Scherzer was always considered one of the best available free agents this offseason, and the only question was whether his projected price tag would affect the market. We now know that it has, but a deal could be arriving for the former Detroit starting pitcher in the near future.

Cardinals Interested In Adding Another Ace?

Scherzer is expected to command a price in the neighborhood of $200 million, which would be one of the largest free agent contracts ever handed out. Many teams have been linked to Scherzer at various points this offseason, but it never seemed like there was a clear favorite to land him.

According to Bleacher Report, one American League executive thinks that he has a pretty good idea of where Scherzer will end up. "The two sleepers all along for me were St. Louis and Washington," he said of Max Scherzer's possible destinations. "They're just guesses. I can see him with the Yankees, too, or going back to Detroit."

Jordan Zimmermann Headed To Boston?

The Cardinals are rumored to be interested in adding another elite starting pitcher to their staff to stay ahead of their NL Central opponents, but they may balk at the price tag. Washington would seem to have other needs to take care of first, but if they move Jordan Zimmermann as they are rumored to be interested in, the Scherzer would be a great fit there too.

The Yankees have a clear need for Scherzer, and they obviiously have deep enough pockets to sign him to the team. If New York wants to open up its checkbook, it could be very hard to say no to them.

Scherzer and his representatives have not had much to say about his free agency since the season ended, but he is represented by Scott Boras, whose clients rarely fail to receive the kind of contract that they demand.

Pitchers and catchers for most teams report next month, so it would seem that a Scherzer deal is probably on the way.
