The Arizona Cardinals were the best team in football for almost a dozen weeks. Unfortunately, a string of bad luck and injuries at the quarterback position derailed their season and sent them home after an opening playoff weekend loss to Carolina.

NFL Round 2: Playoff Picks

After starter Carson Palmer and back-up Drew Stanton went down, third stringer Ryan Lindley was so blatantly ineffective in multiple appearances that many Cardinals fan must have been secretly wishing for a return of Kurt Warner. Well, perhaps to their chagrin, they might have been able to have Warner had Arizona just picked up the phone.

Warner played for the Cardinals for five seasons and guided them to a Super Bowl in 2009. Even though he's been out of the league for years, he told radio host Dan Patrick that he would've considered a playoff comeback for his former team, given the circumstances.

“I would have considered it. Physically, I feel really, really good," Warner said. "Now, is that the same as [playing quarterback] in the NFL? No. … Had they truly reached out and we would’ve talked about it, I would’ve considered it.

“My biggest concern was screwing it up. Even if expectations weren’t high, they would’ve been for me. … If I was the reason they lost, that would’ve been hard for me to handle.”

But Arizona didn't reach out to him. They chose to roll with Lindley despite all evidence to the contrary that he remotely resembles anything close to an NFL quarterback. Lindley rewarded Bruce Arians and co.'s faith in him with an 82-yard, two interception effort in the season-ending loss to the Panthers.
