The WWE flipped the script for the Royal Rumble event later this month by adding "Mr. Money in the Bank" Seth Rollins into the bout with Brock Lesnar and John Cena for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
Update on Randy Savage and Sting Possibly Being Inducted Into WWE Hall of Fame
Triple H announced on Monday Night RAW that Rollins will join the match between the champion Lesnar and already determined No. 1 contender Cena after it was initially built as the "Final Battle" between "The Beast and the "Cenation" leader.
Cena dropped the belt to Lesnar at SummerSlam in August and then defeated him by DQ after interference from Rollins at Night of Champions in September.
Daniel Bryan Possibly Wrestling Before the 2015 Royal Rumble
The WWE built up the rubber match between Cena and Lesnar, but then threw Rollins into it likely because he already has the briefcase and doesn't need the 30-man Royal Rumble Match to get a title shot. It would have been interesting to see him go after two guaranteed title shots though.
Here is a look at the possible outcomes for the Triple Threat Match at the Royal Rumble on Jan. 25 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia and the possible future storylines.
Seth Rollins: As I wrote in my predictions for 2015 column last month, it is likely that Rollins will win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship by year's end, but it is doubtful that the reign will start at the Royal Rumble despite him likely having a good showing.
With Roman Reigns being the expected No. 1 contender for WrestleMania 31, a bout for the gold between two former Shield members would be an intriguing main event, but it is doubtful that the WWE would go that route.
Since Rollins has the briefcase, the WWE wouldn't put the gold on him unless he lost the match initially and attacked the winner to cash-in, but it is doubtful the WWE will end the briefcase storyline abruptly in January.
The WWE could have Rollins cash-in at WrestleMania 31 for the first time in history, but the company usually likes having a babyface stand tall to end the biggest show of the year.
Rollins will likely have a title reign in 2015 and at least cash-in at some point, but it is unlikely that he will walk out of Philadelphia as the champion. The WWE will save his cash-in attempt for the downtime between WrestleMania and SummerSlam.
John Cena: Anytime Cena is in a title match, he has a chance to win the belt as he is the WWE's golden boy. If the WWE really does have cold feet surrounding its WrestleMania plans, they can always rely on Cena to make things right in their minds.
That being said, it is unlikely that Cena will leave the Wells Fargo Center with the title due to the fact that the WWE reportedly expects him to face Rusev at WrestleMania 31 in a high-profile side match that won't be for the gold.
Cena will put up a fight and at the end of the day he'll still have a gripe that he didn't get one last crack at Lesnar one-on-one despite beating Orton at Hell in a Cell to become No. 1 contender.
The WWE could then use Fast Lane - which is its boring alternative to Elimination Chamber this February - as a way to have Cena get his final shot against Lesnar, if the WWE books "The Beast" for that event.
The WWE could have Rusev get involved in the bout at the Rumble or Fast Lane to build to a clash with Cena at the "Show of Shows."
There's always a chance Cena can win the gold, but it is unlikely.
Brock Lesnar: "The Beast" hasn't been built up as an unstoppable monster by the WWE to drop the gold in a Triple Threat Match in January. No, Lesnar was given a truckload of money to do the job under the bright lights at WrestleMania and build another star.
Whether that star is Reigns remains to be seen, but it is likely the WWE will stick with its original plan of having Lesnar drop the gold to Reigns as the company desperately tries to find another No. 1 star behind Cena.
While there are rumors we may get the Daniel Bryan vs. Lesnar match we missed out on at SummerSlam, it seems there is too much doubt about Bryan's injury status and a lot of people feel he can't be a top guy.
Lesnar decimated The Undertaker and ended The Streak at WrestleMania XXX and then dominated Cena at SummerSlam to gain even more credibility than he already had.
The WWE did that for a reason and it's not to drop the gold to an already established Cena or an up-and-coming Rollins who still has a briefcase at the Rumble.
The WWE did it so that "The Beast" can lose to Reigns - the next golden boy - at WrestleMania 31 before either re-signing with the WWE or going off to UFC or Bellator MMA.
Brock Lesnar is leaving the 2015 Royal Rumble as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
