The Oklahoma City Thunder were involved in a three-team trade this week with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the New York Knicks, and it appears that they were nearly involved in another deal also. The team apparently has had discussions with the Brooklyn Nets about swapping some players for the second half of the NBA season.

The deal would have centered around a Kendrick Perkins for Brook Lopez swap. On the surface, the deal looks like a mismatch, as Lopez is a much better player than Perkins, although the teams would have had different motives for the deal.

The Nets have an abysmal salary cap situation, and that is not great for a team that has little or no chance to do anything in the postseason.
They constructed their team to have a one- or two-year window for a title, but the results have been poor.

The Lopez-Perkins deal would allow Brooklyn to shed some salary for next year, as Perkins' deal is expiring. For the Thunder, they would get an obvious upgrade at the center position, although Lopez has struggled with injuries throughout his career. Lopez has played well of late, prompting the team to keep him around for now.

However, as the trade deadline nears, the team may choose to revisit the talks. They have already had discussions with some teams around the league about moving former All Star point guard Deron Williams.
