The seemingly annual talks about an NFL team moving to Los Angeles have heated up again, but it feels a little bit different with the St. Louis Rams at the center of it. Rams owner Stan Kroenke bought 60 acres of land by Hollywood Park last January, and now he has reached a deal to build a stadium on the land.

The Rams played in Los Angeles for decades prior to moving to St. Louis in the mid-90s, and now it appears that they could return to the West Coast if they do not get a new stadium in St. Louis. The team is reportedly close to finalizing an arrangement that will see its current lease at the Edward Jones Dome converted to a year-to-year deal.

Now, according to ESPN, city and state leaders are saying that although they want the team to stay in St. Louis, they will not engage in a "bidding war" over the franchise.

Jeff Rainford, spokesman for the mayor of St. Louis, should not just throw any amount of money at the situation in order to keep the team from moving.

"A National Football League franchise does have value, and we should want one, but let's use some common sense," Rainford said. "The parameters are not a blank check."

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has said that they will provide options designed to keep the team in St. Louis. "St. Louis is an NFL city and I am committed to keeping it that way," said Nixon in a written statement.

The earliest the team could move to Los Angeles would be for the 2016 season, and they would likely play in the L.A. Coliseum or the Rose Bowl temporarily until the new stadium is completed.
