Good or bad, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick's play this season never had been compared to that of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia -- until Garcia made the comparison himself.

Subpar 2014 could cost San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick $113 million

Garcia told CSNBayArea.com that Kaepernick, who has been criticized at length for his play this season, reminds him of himself and he is offering to mentor the 27-year-old.

"He's a more of a supreme athlete than I was in playing the game, but there are a lot of similarities in how he can play the game," Garcia told the site. "I used my athletic ability to extend plays, when needed, to buy time and still make the throw down the field. At the last moment if the throw is not there, if I'm able to make some yards with my feet. I can make 5 to 8 to 10 yards.

"Now, he can make 95 yards with his feet, which is a great advantage. But it think there are a lot of similarities of being able to throw on the run and move the pocket and being able to stay within the pocket and move just slightly to buy time. Those are key factors and those are things I was able to do throughout my career."

Jerry Rice, Bill Parcells say the rest of the 49ers share the blame in Colin Kaepernick's subpar 2014.

According to the report, Garcia is angling for an NFL coaching job and perhaps he sees the opportunity of turning around Kaepernick's fortunes is his "in" with an NFL franchise.

"As somebody who played the position for a long time and didn't fit the stereotype, who had to overcome the odds and battle, not just on a yearly basis, but a daily basis just to prove himself, I know a lot of what it takes in order to achieve at that position," Garcia said. "And I'd be more than happy to help him out any way I can.

"If he's open to it, hey, I'd love nothing more than to be someone who can help him continue to grow."

Kaepernick has not yet responded publicly to Garcia's offer, but running back Frank Gore says he has no doubt Kaepernick will have a bounce-back year in 2015, according to NFL.com.

"He's not broke," Gore, who may be gone next season, told the site. "I'll put anything on this man. He'll be back next year. He'll be back next year."
