Josh Brent Update: Alcohol Detected In Former NFL Player's System, Bond Violation?

Josh Brent, a promising defensive tackle taken by the Dallas Cowboys in the supplemental draft out of Illinois, may be in deep trouble after alcohol was detected in his system by an alcohol-monitoring device he's mandated to wear as part of his $100,000 bond.

Last year, Brent was involved in a fatal car crash that resulted in the death of teammate and friend Jerry Brown Jr. Brent was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter. Court records show he was traveling at 110 miles per hour at the time of the crash, and could have possibly been hitting speeds of 134 miles per hour. He also had been arrested on a previous DUI in 2009, for which he received two years probation and 60 days in jail.

Brent was released on a $100,000 bond, but now the Dallas district attorney's office is moving to have Brent's bond revoked in light of these new allegations of alcohol being in his system. "He is not meeting the specific conditions that come along with the SCRAM unit," said Debbie Denmon, a spokeswoman for the Dallas District Attorney's Office. "He also missed several appointments he should have made, that you have to show up for, so they can monitor the device and check it."

A source close to Brent said that the former Cowboys defensive tackle has not drank any alcoholic beverages, and that the alcohol in his system could be from using mouthwash or some kind of food. The source also said the device Brent has been ordered to wear as part of his bond has gone off several times before.

2012 was shaping up to be a big year for Brent, who had taken advantage of some injuries along the defensive line and been inserted into the starting lineup. He had started five games, and recorded 1.5 sacks and 22 tackles.
