The San Diego Padres have had a busy offseason, but the team is showing no signs of slowing down as it is reportedly in trade talks with the Philadelphia Phillies regarding ace Cole Hamels.
Bran Cashman: Yankees 'Unlikely' To Land Max Scherzer
According to Philly.com, the Phillies and Padres have been engaged in trade talks regarding Hamels and a potential deal could see outfielder Wil Myers -- who was just acquired by San Diego in a four-team trade on Friday -- head to the "City of Brotherly Love" in exchange for Hamels.
San Diego completely overhauled its outfield this offseason, acquiring Matt Kemp from the Los Angeles Dodgers and adding Justin Upton in a deal with the Atlanta Braves. The team's incumbent outfield includes Cameron Maybin, Carlos Quentin, Seth Smith and Will Venable.
Winners and Losers of the MLB Winter Meetings
While the Padres are likely to trade one of the extra in-house outfielders over the ones they just imported, they would likely have to trade a big name in order to land Hamels.
In the past, the Phillies have stated that they would take at least three prospects at or near the MLB level in order to part with their ace.
Though he's been a highly regarded young player, Myers, 24, hit just .222 in 87 games last season with the Tampa Bay Rays with six homers and 35 RBIs. It is uncertain who else the Padres will have to throw in to sweeten the deal.
Hamels, 30, has four years and $96 million remaining on his contract, but a vesting option for 2019 can push the total money to $110 million.
After finishing 77-85 and in third place in the NL West, San Diego has made a myriad of moves to improve and could look to add Hamels to a rotation currently anchored by Andrew Cashner.
The Phillies are expected to be in re-building mode as their pricey roster is aging and the team finished in last place in the NL East with a 73-89 campaign.
Hamels went 9-9 in 2014 with a 2.46 ERA that trailed only NL Cy Young and MVP Award winner Clayton Kershaw in the NL.
Hamels is 108-83 in 275 career games, all with the Phillies, with a 3.27 ERA, 1.142 WHIP and 1,707 strikeouts.
The left-hander is a three-time All-Star and one-time World Series champion. He also won the NLCS and World Series MVP awards in 2008.
