50th Super Bowl Host: San Francisco Leads Race For Super Bowl L

San Francisco has emerged as the favorite to host Super Bowl L, according to reports. NFL owners will vote today on the host city for the league's 50th Super Bowl, which will be held in 2016. The finalists for the game are San Francisco and South Florida.

Houston will compete with the losing bid to host the 2017 Super Bowl, which will also be decided by today's vote. San Francisco has hosted one previous Super Bowl, in 1985, while Miami has been a frequent site to hold the biggest event in American sports.

Despite it's propensity for housing Super Bowls, Miami's bid was hurt by recent setbacks in an effort to upgrade their stadium. "Following the Miami Dolphins' failure to secure public funding for renovations ... San Francisco sits in the driver's seat," Albert Breer of NFL.com reported.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross' proposal for state funding for the renovations was shot down by Miami lawmakers; the city of Miami was burned badly by the Miami Marlins' ballpark fiasco.

On the other hand, San Francisco is boasting a sparkling new stadium, Levi's Stadium, in Santa Clara, that cost $1.2 billion to construct and is set to open next year.

Despite the odds seemingly being stacked against his city, Miami bid chairman Rodney Barreto said, We're extremely optimistic that our bid is going to set a new level and they're going to have a tough decision to make. We've put some new things on the table that are really exciting and are exciting for the South Florida area."
