Bobcats Name Change: Charlotte NBA Team Switching Back To Hornets?

With the New Orleans Hornets changing their name to the Pelicans, a door has opened for the Charlotte Bobcats organization to wipe clean the poor history of the Bobcats, and recall better days by renaming the team the Hornets once again.

CBS Sports has reported that the Bobcats organization is planning to step through that door. There is no official timetable set for the switch, but NBA commissioner in waiting, Adam Silver, said that the process would take at least 18 months to complete. Silver has told season ticket owners that the change should not be difficult because the NBA and not the New Orleans organization own the "Hornets" moniker.

CBS also reports that a search on WhoIs.net revealed the domain name NBAhornets.com was created and registered on May 15th, 2013, just three days ago. In February, Bobcats owner Michael Jordan hinted that a change back to being the Hornets was in the offing.

At the time, Jordan spoke with the Charlotte Observer, saying, "It's definitely an interest down the road, but right now it's the New Orleans Hornets. We would definitely entertain the opportunity. That's as much as we can say right now. We've heard the community ask the question, and we would listen."

Since becoming the Bobcats, professional basketball in Charlotte has been very poor. The Bobcats have existed since 2005, and in that time frame the team's record is 250-572, a winning percentage of 35 percent. The team's career leader in points per game is Stephen Jackson, a player infamous for his involvement in a brawl with fans as a member of the Indiana Pacers, and who only played for the Bobcats for two seasons.

Of all the active teams in the NBA, the Bobcats have the worst winning percentage. They trail the Los Angeles Clippers by about 20 percentage points in that respect. They have also reached the playoffs just once in it's eight-year existence.
