The New York Yankees have opened up contract talks with third baseman Chase Headley and expect to have an agreement in place at some point in the near future.

The news of Headley likely staying in New York comes as a surprise to some as the third baseman has said in the past that he didn’t think he would warm up to New York City. According to reports, he has not only warmed up to the city, but he is interested in a long-term extension with the club.

Now the Headley is likely staying in New York, the Yankees are showing their hand when it comes to Alex Rodriguez and free agent Pablo Sandoval. The Yankees are likely to use A-Rod as a full-time designated hitter and part time first baseman as he returns from his one-year suspension.

Sandoval on the other hand is a bit more interesting. The Yankees are rumored to be interested in talking to the San Francisco Giants third baseman, but with an asking price over $100 million, it is unlikely that the two sides find common ground.

Headley played in 58 games for the Yankees in 2014 and he batted .262 with six home runs, 17 runs batted in and three stolen bases. Headley was due for a similar pay day to Sandoval after a 115 RBI 2012, but his declined numbers have made him a prime trade target that the Yankees eventually acquired.
