The Dallas Cowboys have signed suspended defensive tackle Josh Brent to a one-year contract extension while Michael Sam is currently looking for work.

The Dallas Morning News reported that Brent, 26, who was sentenced earlier this year to 180 days in jail and 10 years' probation for a intoxication manslaughter conviction for the December 2013 crash that led to the death of teammate Jerry Brown Jr., signed a one-year deal in 2015 for the minimum $745,000.

The signing comes less than two weeks after the Cowboys waived practice squad player Sam. Sam was trying to become the team's first openly gay player to play in a regular-season game.

Brent is currently serving a 10-game suspension related to the conviction and is eligible to play on Nov. 23 against the New York Giants. He returned to practice this week.

Owner Jerry Jones lauded Brent's play during his return.

"Josh had a day yesterday of days," Jones said Friday on KRLD-FM (105.3), as the Dallas Morning News reported. "He was outstanding. We were all encouraged by what we saw yesterday."

Brent was released from prison in June and spent the final 45 days of his sentence in a treatment facility. The report said that Brent rejoined the Cowboys on Sept. 29 and has participating in conditioning and team meetings.

NFL.com had questioned Brent's decision to sign with the Cowboys.

NFL Media's Ian Rapoport pointed out that "Brent could have possibly made more than the minimum next season on the open market if he played well to close this year," NFL.com reported. "The contract could be Brent returning the loyalty Jones has shown."
