The San Francisco 49ers could be getting some reinforcements of defense sooner than anticipated according to multiple reports.

According to ESPN and NBC Sports, the NFL is on the verge of reducing outside linebacker Aldon Smith’s suspension by a game or two. Smith has already served seven games of the nine game suspension so it is a possibility that he will be available to return to the 49ers this week.

“Sources confirmed an NBC Sports report that Smith's suspension could be reduced by one or two games, which makes it possible he could be available to play in a Week 9 game against the Rams or the Week 10 game against the Saints. He must maintain his good behavior for commissioner Roger Goodell to reduce the penalty.

Under terms of his suspension, the league has allowed Smith to be in the team's facility for meetings and conditioning, although he has not been allowed to practice with the team.”

Smith was suspended by the NFL for multiple infractions against the personal conduct policy, but the league has shown its willingness to reduce suspensions in the past (Ben Roethlisberger and Brandon Marshall).

Rams Getting Set to Move to Los Angeles?

The 49ers find themselves at 4-3 going into their bye after being throttled by the Denver Broncos 42-17 on Sunday Night Football. Smith has registered 42.0 sacks in 43 career games, of which 24 were starts.
