There is some minor speculation that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson could battle the mighty Russian Rusev at WrestleMania 31 next spring following their altercation on Monday's episode of RAW.

Injury Update On Roman Reigns And Backstage Plans For Bray Wyatt

The Rock shocked the world by returning to WWE television for a one-night appearance Monday night at RAW from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn by interrupting Rusev and cutting a promo on him and Lana before throwing him out of the ring to end the segment.

Wrestlingheadlines.com reports that while there are some rumors that Rusev vs. The Rock could be a part of WrestleMania 31 on March 29, 2015 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., the feeling backstage Monday night was that a match between the two is unlikely though it could conceivably be a feud come WrestleMania season in early 2015.

Backstage Update On 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin Possibly Returning To WWE

According to the report, WWE officials didn't want The Rock to do anything more than knock Rusev out of the ring because they wanted to keep the character strong. The reason The Rock's signature Rock Bottom and People's Elbow moves weren't performed was because the WWE wanted to protect Rusev's image and mystique amid the WWE Universe.

Johnson appeared on RAW because he just happened to be in New York City to conduct business with Time Warner and it appeared to just be a classic case of great timing for the WWE as the company was able to contact The Rock and keep his appearance a surprise.

"So we wanted to do something special for the crowd tonight, we wanted to do something special for the people," The Rock told WWE.com in a YouTube video after the appearance. "And we created this moment. So you know what happens is for a moment like this it's the WWE Universe...We want to create a great moment for them and it requires a lot of other elements and a lot of elements to come together to keep it private, to keep it quiet. Nobody knew except for me sending out a tweet three seconds before I went out, but that's okay."

Regarding WrestleMania 31, while a match with Rusev could be off the table, The Rock recently told Muscle & Fitness that he would like to return for an appearance at Levi's Stadium next March.

"Yeah, I'd love to," Johnson said. "We just have to figure out what it could be and what the most ideal matchup would be, and who it would be with. Because I always feel like if I go back to the WWE, then it has to be bigger and greater than what I've done in the past, and I don't know what could be bigger in terms of marquee value in terms of value across the board and to me it has to surpass what we've done."
