The Oakland Raiders have started their search for a new head coach and Mike Holmgren has confirmed he has met with the team over their bye week.

Holmgren confirmed that he has met with Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie, but said that 'no jobs were discussed' in the meeting. NBC Sports reported that Holmgren could be an option for the Raiders in order for McKenzie to keep his job.

“Strong and persistent chatter has emerged in recent days linking Holmgren to the job. It’s a fairly obvious connection, given that former Holmgren lieutenant Reggie McKenzie serves as the General Manager in Oakland. McKenzie, who could be the next guy out the door in Oakland, has said he’ll hire the next coach. If McKenzie does, Holmgren could be the optimal Hail Mary option, especially since Holmgren likely would not be inclined to replace McKenzie — unlike other big-name coaches Davis may pursue.”

The Raiders have been considered the NFL’s worst team for some time now and the hiring of Holmgren would be a step in the right direction. The 66-year-old Holmgren hasn’t coached since 2008 but was part of the Cleveland Browns front office for some time after stepping away from coaching.

Lions Cut Alex Henery; Bring in Matt Prater

Holmgren said he doesn't believe he will be the Raiders next head coach, but at this point in the season it is too early to set anything in stone. The Raiders are rumored to be interested in making a splash with their next head coaching hire and have been tied to Jon Gruden as well.
