No. 22 East Carolina represents the one shining achievement of the American Athletic Conference to this point this season and they look to improve to 4-1 against the 0-4 SMU Mustangs.

This is the Pirates' first game as a ranked team since September 27, 2008 and it comes after a bye week. East Carolina coach Ruffin McNeill preached that the ranking was an honor despite losing to then-No. 21 South Carolina earlier this season.

"I'm honored because it gives the nation the chance to see our players, and of course, our university," McNeill said. "It's recognition they've earned and deserve."

"In our schedule, we find out what our strengths and weakness are quickly," McNeill said. "We approached the bye week as a chance to correct things on all three sides of the ball.

"We know (Saturday) is what it's about here. We know the rest of our season is focused on the American Conference.”

The 0-4 Mustangs have been embarrassed all season and have only put together 12 points in four contests. The Mustangs are down to their fourth string quarterback for Saturday’s game and it could be over before it even begins.

SMU and East Carolina have split the four match ups they have had all-time with the Mustangs winning the last meeting 45-38 on November 26, 2010.
