It was recently reported that the WWE's DVD distributor made an error by putting an image of the "nWo Sting" on the back of Steve "Sting" Borden's recent DVD and some new information has come out about the mistake and it may not have been an error in the first place.

On the back of WWE's Best of Sting release, there was a picture of Jeff Farmer, who portrayed the "fake" Sting in WCW and then again in New Japan in 1996 and 1997 where an image of the real Sting was apparently supposed to be.

The DVD distributor eventually corrected the problem and wrote a Facebook post acknowledging the gaffe while saying that the problem has been corrected and the DVD's with Farmer on them would now be a collector's item.

Wrestlingheadlines.com reports that word is that the picture of Farmer was not a mistake as far as designers were concerned because the designers of the DVD thought that the real Sting's confrontation with the nWo Sting was important enough to be included on the packaging.

There is a segment on the DVD about the confrontation between the two Stings, but the WWE has removed Farmer's images from all the packaging going forward.

Here is the statement that the WWE's DVD distributor wrote on Facebook:

"The first batch of The Best of Sting DVDs and Blu-Rays will have a picture of 'Fake Sting' on it. ‪#‎oops This mistake will become a collectors dream. Out October 1. Pre-Order now," the distributor wrote on Facebook.

WCW pulled a swerve on its fans in Sept. 1996 by having Farmer, who was wrestling under the ring name Cobra, dress up as Sting and attack Sting's friend Lex Luger -- making many people believe that Borden turned heel.

It later was revealed that it was a "fake Sting" who turned on Luger and that the impostor was played by Farmer.

Farmer eventually moved on to New Japan Pro Wrestling in 1997 and was a part of nWo Japan. The photo of Farmer that appears on the back of Sting's DVD comes from his appearance in NJPW.

The WWE DVD gaffe is as cloudy as Sting's deal with the WWE as there have been reports that Sting wants to wrestle a match -- likely the last in his career and his first in the WWE -- but the two sides have yet to come to terms on an agreement for such a contest to happen.
