Jets quarterback Geno Smith was showered with boos and chants for Michael Vick as New York lost to the Detroit Lions 24-17. Smith then dropped some inappropriate language on the home crowd for their chants.

Smith apologized for swearing at the crowd to open his post-game press conference and clarified that it was only one fan who set him off and it was not a Michael Vick comment that did it.

"I want to apologize if any kid saw me saying any negative remarks walking off the field," Smith said. "I kind of let my temper get the best of me in that situation. It's part of my learning process. I have to get better with that. I have to let that stuff roll off my back, but today I didn't do well with that."

Smith was subpar in the Jets’ loss to the Lions and they are now 1-3 on the season. Smith completed 17 or 33 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown, but never really looked comfortable against the Lions front seven.

Coach Rex Ryan has remained loyal to Smith through his ups and downs, but if the team continues to slide he could look to plug Vick into the starting lineup. The Jets offensive line stood by Smith and said he has to be smarter about what he says to the crowd, but they understand his frustration.

The Jets travel to San Diego (3-1) to play the white hot Chargers next Sunday.
