Milwaukee is clinging to hope with its tragic number down to one for elimination from a postseason berth as it enters play four games behind the San Francisco Giants for the final wild-card spot in the National League. Cincinnati is eliminated from postseason contention.

The Brewers are closing out a nine-game road trip they are currently 3-5 on while the Reds are wrapping up the first series of a six-game homestand to close the season.

Cincinnati picked up a 3-1 victory in the series-opener on Tuesday while the Brewers kept their playoff hopes alive with a 5-0 shutout win behind a strong complete-game performance by Kyle Lohse.

Yovani Gallardo (8-10, 3.46 ERA) mans the mound for Milwaukee while Cincinnati counters with David Holmberg, who is 1-2 with a 5.25 ERA this season.

Gallardo takes the ball knowing the Brewers need to do their part after getting plenty of help from the Los Angeles Dodgers, who clinched the National League West Division crown Wednesday and took two of three from the Giants.

Gallardo is coming off of an outing where he held the Pittsburgh Pirates to five hits in seven scoreless innings and struck out 11.

"That's the best I've seen him all year," catcher Jonathan Lucroy said of Gallardo per MLB.com. "Absolutely. He was awesome."

Lucroy has been awesome himself this season, as his 52 doubles lead the MLB and are one shy for the all-time MLB record for two-baggers in a single season for catchers. Lucroy leads Milwaukee with a .301 batting average as well.

The Reds, meanwhile, have been paced by third baseman Todd Frazier as he is tied for third in the NL with 28 homers and leads the team with a .278 batting average. Rookie of the Year candidate Billy Hamilton has been a spark plug this season, ranking second in the NL with 56 stolen bases while catcher Devin Mesoraco paces the team with 78 RBI.

Holmberg is coming off of a 2-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals last time out when he allowed two solo homers in the defeat.

"I made a couple of mistakes," Holmberg admitted afterward, according to MLB.com.

The Brewers look to do their part to keep their postseason hopes alive while the Reds hope to play spoiler and shut the door on their division rival's playoff hopes when these teams take the field this afternoon at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.
