Minnesota Twins pitcher Phil Hughes was set to make $500,000 on Wednesday, but some terrible weather rained on his parade.

Hughes, who made his final start of the season on Wednesday, pitched eight innings for the Twins in their 2-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, but eight innings wasn't enough for the Twins pitcher.

Hughes was set to come out for the ninth inning in an attempt to get one more out to trigger a $500,000 innings bonus in his contract, but then the rain hit. A 66 minute delay between the eighth and ninth inning made it impossible for Hughes to return and he fell fell one-third of an inning short of his bonus.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire told reporters that he will not use Hughes out of the bullpen in the team’s last games and Hughes said that he was very aware of his situation when the rain hit.

"I was very aware of it, but some things aren't meant to be," Hughes said

Hughes had a great season for the Twins and he makes a base salary of $8 million with a pair of $250,000 bonuses for reaching 180 and 195 innings. Hughes finishes the season 16-10 with a single-season major league record 11.63 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Hughes has 186 strikeouts and 16 walks on the season which is good enough to top Bret Saberhagen’s 11.00 ratio (143 strikeouts and 13 walks) for the New York Mets in 1994.
