Miami Marlins slugger and National League MVP front-runner Giancarlo Stanton has been shut down for the season as he recovers from being hit in the face by a fastball.
Marlins manager Mike Redmond made the decision to shut down Stanton after determining their wasn't enough time left in the season to get the right fielder ready for a return.
Bronx Bombers To Use 'Monetary Muscle' To Pursue Giancarlo Stanton In Offseason?
"It's the whole healing process, the healing of the bones and the swelling," Redmond said "There's just not enough time for it to properly heal, and for him to get medically cleared to be able to play.”
Stanton suffered facial fractures, dental damage, deep cuts that required stitches and two black eyes after being hit in the face with a fastball from Milwaukee Brewers’ pitcher Mike Fiers last Thursday. Stanton also suffered a concussion, but has been given neurological clearance from his doctors.
Redmond said that Stanton will make a full recovery for the long term and that the slugger could experiment with a protective flap on his batting helmet. Atlanta's Jason Heyward has used the helmet since being hit in the face by New York Mets' Jon Niese in August of last year.

Fiers was fined by Major League Baseball for hitting Stanton and causing the benches to clear. Marlins pitcher Anthony Desclafani retaliated by hitting Carlos Gomez with a pitch the next inning and was suspended for three games and fined.
Stanton finishes his 2014 campaign with 37 home runs, 105 runs batted in and a .288 batting average. At the time of his injury, Stanton led the league in home runs and was seen as the favorite to win the National League MVP Award.
Stanton is earning $10.35 million this year and is eligible for free agency after the 2016 season.
