Boston Red Sox Rumors: Dustin Pedroia Shut Down For Season-Ending Wrist Surgery? [VIDEO]

Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is facing season-ending surgery after complaining of pain and soreness in his left left hand and wrist.

A decision on Pedroia is expected to come down from doctors on Wednesday, but his options do not favor him playing the rest of the season. Pedroia’s options are to rest the wrist, have the surgery or continue playing.

Pedroia spoke about the wrist and said he is seeing doctors and the team will take the actions necessary going forward.

"They're talking. There's some options that they're going over," Pedroia said. "We're trying to do the best we can to figure out a plan and go forward.”

"We've tried to manage it the best we can," Pedroia said. "It just gets to a point where obviously it hurts so it's tough going out there and trying to do what you're accustomed to doing and you can’t."

Red Sox manager John Farrell did not rule out shutting down Pedroia for the season, but remained optimistic that the injury wouldn't require surgery.

"With Dustin it gets to the point of taking the decision out of his hands because he does want to continue to play. It hasn't been determined if he were to continue to play, does it put him at further risk," Farrell said. "I don't think the medical staff is saying that he's at further risk. It's just to the point where the discomfort is there.”

Pedroia has been a far cry from his 2013 numbers and is batting .278 with seven home runs, 53 RBIs and six stolen bases in 2014. Pedroia put together an impressive 2013 by batting .301 with nine homers, 84 RBIs and 17 stolen bases.

Yankees To Pursue Giancarlo Stanton In Offseason?

The Red Sox are 63-82 on the season and are not going to make the postseason this year. The medicine for Pedroia could be to shut it down and come back 100 percent for the 2015 season.
