Goals: Mexico—Layun 18'
Recap: More than 18,000 were on hand to witness Mexico capture a 1-0 victory over Bolivia on Tuesday.
It took multiple attempts, but El Tri managed to open the affair in the first half. A rebounded finish from Miguel Layun sent the aforementioned crowd into a frenzy just 18 minutes into the match. Conceding 64 percent possession, Bolivia had very little chance of finding an equalizer. By the final whistle, Mexico had outshot their South American counterpart 18-3.
Key Moment: Bolivia had one final opportunity to find an equalizer late in the match. Unfortunately for La Verde, a dangerous header could do nothing more than bang off the post in stoppage-time.
Man of the Match: Only four of Mexico’s 18 attempts managed to land on target. Twenty-five percent of that productivity belonged to Layun. One-hundred percent of the victory goes along with it.
Lesson Learned: Mexico is still in search of their finishing boots. Entering Tuesday’s match, El Tri recorded just seven goals in their last five contests. That modicum of success didn’t see much of a rise against Bolivia. The team did manage to capture a 1-0 victory, but Miguel Herrera will be left demanding more. Mexico can ill-afford to continue squandering chance after chance in competitive tournaments.
Up Next: Mexico returns home to meet with Honduras on Oct. 9, while Bolivia’s next fixture is yet to be confirmed.
