"I am excited we are able once again to bring these two programs together on the football field," said . "Football games between Notre Dame and Ohio State make great sense from a strength-of-schedule standpoint. In addition, with [Ohio State athletic director] Gene Smith having both played and coached football at Notre Dame -- and with [Ohio State coach] Urban Meyer having served as an assistant football coach at Notre Dame -- there are some obvious, high-profile connections between our two institutions.”

The teams will meet on September 3, 2022 in Columbus, Ohio and then again in South Bend, Indiana, on September 23, 2023. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said that he has wanted to schedule Notre Dame “every year” ever since the two teams met in the 2006 Fiesta Bowl.

Notre Dame and Ohio State have met five times over their life times and the Buckeyes lead the all-time series 3-2 after starting 0-2 against the Fighting Irish. The 2006 Fiesta Bowl was the last time the two teams played and they played a previous home-and-home series in 1995 and 1996.

No. 16 Notre Dame takes on the Big Ten’s Michigan Wolverines this weekend at 7:30 p.m. in South Bend.
