The Chicago Cubs have lost Starlin Castro to an ankle injury and his season could very well be over. Considering the Cubs are a goldmine of young middle infield talent at the moment, could Castro be on his way out of Chicago?
According to the Chicago Sun Times, the Cubs could look to deal their three-time All-Star this offseason to start the youth movement in the middle of the infield.
When Will the Yankees Retire Derek Jeter's No. 2?
“The Cubs continue to insist Castro is their shortstop. But no one in the organization has denied some of their newly overstocked inventory of young middle-infield talent could be in play this winter when they start getting aggressive in filling long-term needs, such as frontline pitching.”
Cubs general manager Jed Hoyershot down any potential Castro trade talks, but did say that he is the reason that Javy Baez is playing second base.
Cubs, Braves Discuss Trade Involving B.J. Upton
“He’s our shortstop,” said Hoyer “And there’s a reason why we have Javy [Baez] playing second base right now.”
Despite what Hoyer said, Baez is set to become the Cubs everyday shortstop if Castro is done for the year. If the Cubs were planning on moving forward into 2015 with a Castro-Baez combo at shortstop and second base respectively, wouldn't the team want Baez to get as much time at second base as possible?
The Cubs have a natural shortstop in Arismendy Alcantara who could play the position in the short term while Baez continues to learn second base. Baez moving to shortstop could spell doom for Castro in the near future.
Yanks, Cubs Favorites to Land Jon Lester in Free Agency
The New York Mets, Seattle Mariners and Miami Marlins are all teams that have been interested in the Cubs surplus of middle infield talent in the past. Castro is the Cubs' first three-time All-Star at shortstop in over 40 years.
