The Penn State Nittany Lions have had the same uniform and color scheme for as long as college football has existed, but coach James Franklin can see that changing in the near future.

Franklin spoke recently about the possibility of changing the school’s iconic, classic look and said that he is a fan of what Oregon and Maryland have done with their schemes.

Maryland, Penn State Newest Big Ten Rivalry?

"I've always been a big fan of what Oregon has done, and my time at Maryland, so I think we're going to do something similar to that," Franklin said with a smile. "We're not going to do anything gradual. We're just going to go right after it.”

Franklin sounded rather adamant that change is coming to Happy Valley, but will the change become as drastic as Oregon? In recent years, the Penn State program has toyed with small changes to the uniforms such as adding names to the back of the jerseys or adding the No. 42 to the helmets in honor of then-injured captain Michael Mauti.

Franklin has done all the right things in his short time with the Nittany Lions, but at a university that is so set in their ways, could a drastic uniform change rub many the wrong way?

Penn State remains under NCAA sanction, but reports are that they will have a “strong case” to be reinstated after the 2014 season. Penn State is 1-0 on the season after a thrilling 26-24 victory over Central Florida in Dublin, Ireland.

Penn State goes for 2-0 at home against the Akron Zips, Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
