The New York Yankees have pulled out all the stops in honor of Derek Jeter’s last season in pinstripes, but will the team retire ‘The Captain’s” number this weekend?

Rumors started to circulate Wednesday night that the Yankees had made the decision to retire Jeter’s No. 2 jersey this Sunday before New York’s game against the Kansas City Royals. According to Newsday, the Yankees have made no such decision and said the reports are simply not true.

Yankees to To Pursue Giancarlo Stanton

“Derek Jeter Day will be held Sunday and a source familiar with the team's plans said the original idea was to retire Jeter's number that day. As of Wednesday night, that decision had not been finalized, the source said.”

Jeter’s jersey will be retired at some point, there is no question about that, and it could very well happen Sunday. Jeter’s No. 2 will join Mariano Rivera’s No. 42 and Joe Torre’s No. 6 as the latest jerseys to be retired by the Yankees.

When the No. 2 is retired, the Yankees will have no numbers in the single digits remaining and have even retired the No. 8 twice (Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey). The other Yankees to have their numbers retired from numbers one to 10 are No. 1 Billy Martin, No. 3 Babe Ruth, No. 4 Lou Gehrig, No. 5 Joe DiMaggio, No. 7 Mickey Mantle, and No. 9 Roger Maris.

When asked recently why he choose the number two, Jeter didn't have a significant tie to the number.

"The true story, they gave it to me," he said "I didn't say I wanted this number or wanted that number."

"I always assumed," he said, "it was the smallest jersey.”
