It was smooth sailing for the start of the Steve Sarkisian era at USC until this past week and now the Trojans need to actually play football against the Fresno State Bulldogs.

USC is entering the game as No. 15 in the nation and have had a whirlwind of media coverage this past week in light of the Josh Shaw controversy and then Anthony Brown's allegations that coach Sarkisian is a racist.

Sarkisian has downplayed all the negatives surrounding the program this past week and focused on the positive. He spoke about the power of USC and their ability to remain competitive during their NCAA sanctions.

"I don't know many schools that could have won 10 games twice during the middle of sanctions with the loss of scholarships -- and built two brand-new buildings," Sarkisian said. "I think it says a lot about the power of SC.”

Returning quarterback Cody Kessler leads the Trojans into 2014 and this will be the last year that the program is docked scholarships.

Fresno State is looking to move past the Derek Carr era and it will be a rough transition for the team. The Bulldogs have won at least a share of the Mountain West the past two seasons, but that was with Carr. The team hasn't named a starting quarterback yet, but either Brian Burrell or Brandon Connette will get the start.

Fresno State has lost 17 straight games against ranked opponents and that streak started again the No. 1 USC on November 19, 2005 to the tune of 50-42.

USC leads the all-time series with Fresno State 2-1.
