The No. 17 Fighting Irish are expected to have some growing pains on defense but not they find themselves without three starters against the Owls of Rice.

Coach Brian Kelly announced that cornerback KeiVarae Russell, receiver DaVaris Daniels, defensive end Ishaq Williams and backup linebacker Kendall Moore will not play for the Irish on Saturday and their have been no developments in their situation.

All is not lost for the Irish as they get quarterback Everett Golson back from a year suspension and he will look to get Notre Dame back to the national championship. With a young and inexperienced defense, Golson will be relied upon much more to put the Irish in a potion to compete with more points than ever before.

Rice is coming off a 10-4 season in which they won Conference USA with a 7-1 record, but were crushed by Mississippi State 44-7 in the Liberty Bowl. Junior Driphus Jackson takes over for the Owls at quarterback and his only appearance for the team was a relief appearance in the 2012 Armed Forces Bowl where he rallied the Owls to a 33-14 win.

Rice has lost 21 consecutive games against ranked opponents, allowing an average of 54.3 points in its 11 losses since 2005.
