Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon has been suspended for the 2014 season by the NFL after his appeal was denied by the appeal board.

Gordon released a statement after the ruling and said he would like apologize to the Cleveland Browns first and foremost.

“I’d like to apologize to my teammates, coaches, the Cleveland Browns organization and our fans. I am very disappointed that the NFL and its hearing office didn’t exercise better discretion and judgment in my case. I would like to sincerely thank the people who have been incredibly supportive of me during this challenging time, including my family, my agent, my union, my legal team, and the Cleveland Browns staff.”

Gordon will miss the entirety of the 2014 season and will also miss training camp with the Browns in 2015. Gordon is eligible for reinstatement from the NFL after the 2014 season, but will still likely miss training camp in 2015.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter posted a response from the Browns on his Facebook page. The Browns are not happy with the way the process was handled by the league.

“Browns sources are baffled as to why Josh Gordon ruling has taken so long and frustrated over where it could leave them and Gordon. If a year-long suspension is announced now, Gordon would miss all of next summer's training camp under the policy. Browns sources said there would be an extreme amount of frustration in the organization over that ruling and why it has taken so long to hand down.”

Despite playing in only 14 games, Gordon caught 87 balls for a league high 1646 yards with nine touchdowns. Gordon is seen as one of the brightest young stars in the NFL, but his frequent off the field issues could cut that promising career short.

The NFL did not release a statement as to what caused the delay in Gordon’s hearing.
