Don’t look now, but the New York Yankees starting pitching rotation is starting get healthy. The rotation is getting so healthy, in fact, that the team is considering a six-man rotation.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Yankees could turn to a six-man rotation when Masahiro Tanaka returns to the rotation and pitching coach Larry Rothchild is one of the biggest supporters of the idea.

“Absolutely” was the word he used to describe if he was serious about attempting this. And not just because myopically he has to figure out how to get the best out of Masahiro Tanaka and Michael Pineda in September and that duo plus CC Sabathia and, perhaps, Ivan Nova next year. But because he sees the epidemic of pitching injuries, particularly the need for Tommy John surgeries, Rothschild says, “I think people are going to have to look at a lot of alternatives.”

The idea of a six-man rotation isn't a terrible idea for the Yankees considering where they find themselves at this juncture of the season.

Michael Pineda and Masahiro Tanaka have been dominant in their limited action while newcomers Brandon McCarthy, Chris Capuano and Shane Greene have been more than serviceable. Insert the ever consistent Hiroki Kuroda and you have a solid six-man rotation.

This move could be to help Tanaka adjust to pitching on five days rest, but until the season is over they ant him to pitch on the added rest that he is accustomed to from his days overseas.

The Yankees are six games back in the American League East and two and a half games back in the American League Wild Card. The Yankees are expected to get Tanaka back at some point in September.
