Klay Thompson is a Golden State Warrior today, which may not seem like a big deal because he was one yesterday. But it is a big deal to him.
The Cleveland Cavaliers officially traded for the Minnesota Timberwolves today, ending the flirtation and near agreement the Warriors had with the Timberwolves to acquire Love.
Golder State losing "pissed" Klay Thompson to free agency next summer?
The Warriors decided they did not want to break up the chemistry between Thompson, backcourt mate Stephen Curry and David Lee over bringing in Love and Kevin Martin to team up with Curry.
Bleacher Report's Ric Bucher reported that Thompson was "pissed" at the prospect of being traded, but according to the San Jose Mercury News, he was not angry; he was relieved.
LeBron James chose Kevin Love over Andrew Wiggins
"I'm happy. It makes me feel great," Thompson told the Mercury News. "The Warriors believe in me. That makes me want to work that much harder. They believe in me and Steph, they believe in the team we have. I believe in us, too. I think we have all the ingredients to win a championship."
And there's a reason to believe Thompson is glad, rather than mad. It's not as if the Warriors were interested in just any player for which they would unload Thompson. Love averaged a career-high 26.1 points per game and 12.5 rebounds.
According to the Mercury News, Thompson was not angry about the prospect of leaving the Warriors:
"Thompson said the rumors of being traded didn't bother him too much," the newspaper reported. "But it was clear he was relieved. He said he knew the possibility was there and that Love was an enticing piece. Part of him even started mentally preparing for Minnesota. But he was in contact with new head coach Steve Kerr."
Now it's up to Kerr to finish what former coach Mark Jackson started - turning a group of young players that were potential NBA title contenders into actual NBA contenders.
