Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione and coach Bob Stoops released a joint statement on the matter and said that they take the situation very seriously and that the punishment is most certainly the right thing to do.
"As the university has demonstrated in the past, we are committed to winning the right way," the two said. "As an example to others, OU sets the highest possible standards for its student-athletes, coaches and staff.”
Mixon was charged Friday with misdemeanor assault after reports surfaced that he had punched a woman and broke four bones in her face. According to ESPN’s handling of the incident report, the incident took place in a local bar around the Oklahoma campus.

“The alleged incident occurred at Pickleman's Gourmet Cafe on July 25. According to the incident report, Amelia Rae Molitor, a 20-year-old Oklahoma student from Euless, Texas, told police that Mixon punched her, breaking four bones in her face.”
Mixon’s attorney maintains that his client did nothing wrong and was simply defending himself "from a very intoxicated and troubled young woman.” If found guilty, Mixon faces up to a year in prison.
Oklahoma is ranked No. 4 in the AP's preseason poll after an impressive 2013 season that ended with a 45-31 victory over Alabama in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Mixon is one of Oklahoma’s top recruits of the 2013 class and was ranked the No.6 running back in all of the nation coming out of high school.
Mixon will still be able to attend classes and receive his finical aid if he meets the requirements set forth on him.
