The New York Jets quarterback situation remains up in the air, and both Geno Smith and Michael Vick played fairly well in the first preseason game. Smith is believed to have the edge on Vick because of his age and what he could mean to the Jets future.

With that mindset this offseason, reports are that Smith worked extremely hard in the offseason to prepare mentally. During his time off, Smith studied film of several defensive coordinators in their previous stops all on his own.

"That's smart as hell," head coach Rex Ryan said.

"I never even knew about it. He wants to be great. He just doesn't want to be a guy that gets through. God touched the kid. He's got so much ability. He can throw, he can run, he can do all that. But it's that work ethic. As a quarterback, you almost have to be a gym rat. And he's done it."

Smith spoke to The Daily News as well about his offseason sessions. "I like watching film anyway. It was one of those things where I didn't have anything to do anyway, so I just wanted to kind of get ahead of stuff."

He didn't play much vs. Indianapolis in the first preseason game, but in his stint Smith completed 4-of-6 passes for 55 yards and had no touchdowns but also zero interceptions.
