Ryan Mallett’s subpar performance in the Patriots’ 23-6 loss to the Washington Redskins might have put the final nail in the coffin of any chance New England had of trading the former Arkansas standout.

The Patriots were rumored to be interesting in showcasing Mallett in an attempt to entice a bidding war for the 26-year-old signal caller, but he fell flat in his first audition. Mallett finished his night with a stat line of 5 of 12 passes for 55 yards, but four of his five completions went for more than 11 yards.

Not all the blame falls on Mallett as both the wide receiver core and offensive line had miscues during his time on the field. The Patriot receivers had some miscommunications with Mallett at some points and left tackle Nate Solder got crushed by Redskins' Brian Orakpo for an easy sack.

It was unlikely that the Patriots would be able to trade Mallett for their asking price, but the soon-to-be free agent didn't help his cause much either. For the Redskins, potential trade target Kirk Cousins was much sharper as he went 9-of-13 for 103 yards and a touchdown. Cousins touchdown pass was a pretty 10-yard strike to Aldrick Robinson near the end of the first quarter.

The Redskins have not expressed interest in trading Cousins, yet, but it is believed that Cousins and Mallett will see plenty if interest when/if they become free agents.
