Carmelo Anthony is 3-1 against LeBron James and the Miami Heat this season, and now Anthony is beating James in something else too, according to reports--jersey sales.
Carmelo Anthony's jersey is the hottest-selling jersey in the NBA these days, based on sales at the NBA Store in New York City as well as online sales since last November. Last year, Anthony's jersey sales ranked fourth.
The man who is third on the list, Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder, was just passed by Anthony on the 2013 points per game list. Durant, the 24-year-old winner of three consecutive scoring titles was passed by Anthony after the Knicks topped the Thunder Sunday afternoon 125-120. Anthony scored 36 points in the win while Durant had 27.
While Anthony may be in front of James and Durant in terms of jersey sales, both James and Durant have had more team success. James is ranked fourth in the league in scoring with 26.9 points per game, and he's also averaging 8.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists. Additionally, the Miami Heat own the best record in the NBA (60-16) and recently fell just six wins shy of matching the longest single-season winning streak in league history.
As for Durant, the Thunder have the third-best record in the league, and like James, his scoring has dipped ever so slightly because of his increased ability to create for teammates. In addition to his nightly 28-point contribution, Durant is recording 7.9 rebounds a game, and a career-high 4.5 assists, a full assist per game higher than last season. Durant is also the league's best free throw shooter, knocking them down at a 90.6 percent clip.
The Heat and Thunder are also the top two favorites to win the O'Brien trophy this season. Despite all that, Anthony and his scoring prowess make the Knicks a unique threat to Miami in the East, and to Oklahoma City should both teams reach the Finals.
