Philadelphia Flyers general manager Ron Hextall released a statement saying that defenseman Kimmo Timonen has been diagnosed with blood clots in his leg and lungs and he may never be able to play again.

Hextall released the statement Tuesday and didn’t answer questions. The statement in full reads:

Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen has been diagnosed with blood clots in his lower right leg and in both lungs. Kimmo is currently being treated for this disorder back in his home country of Finland. His return to play is yet to be determined.

The 2014-15 season was expected to be the 39-year-old Timonen’s last season in the NHL, but that looks to be in doubt after his diagnosis. Timonen signed one-year, $3.5 million deal to stay in Philadelphia and retire a Flyer at the end of the season.

Former Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tomas Vokoun underwent surgery to remove blood clots from his pelvis before last season and has yet to play again. Vokoun is awaiting a team to song him this offseason, but did say that the surgery “saved his life.”

Timonen put together a solid 2013-14 campaign and registered 35 points in 77 games. Timonen has played in 519 games with the Flyers and has produced 270 points while averaging 22:27 minutes on ice per game.

Timonen has registered 571 points in his 15-year career with the Flyers and Nashville Predators.
