Fresh off a busy day in the trade market, St. Louis looks to avoid a sweep as it finishes up a six-game road trip it is 2-5 on while San Diego looks to complete the sweep in the opening series of a six-game homestand. The Padres topped the Cardinals 3-1 Tuesday and then blew them out with a 12-1 triumph Wednesday.
St. Louis enters play in third place in the NL Central, 2.5 games behind the first place Milwaukee Brewers while San Diego sits in third place in the NL West, 12.5 games behind the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.
Shelby Miller (7-8, 4.20 ERA) toes the rubber for the Cardinals while the Padres counter with Odrisamer Despaigne, who is 2-2 with a 1.66 ERA.
Despaigne, a rookie, will look to bounce back from his rough start last time out when he failed to get out of the fourth inning and walked five hitters.
"It looked as though he was trying to be a little too fine," said Padres manager Bud Black per MLB.com. "He just couldn't throw a first-pitch strike."
The rookie will look to shut down a St. Louis lineup that is anchored by first baseman Matt Adams, who is third in the NL with a .315 batting average and has 12 homers and 47 RBI this season. Shortstop Jhonny Peralta leads the team in homers (14) while outfielder Matt Holliday paces the Cardinals in RBI (53).
San Diego counters with a lineup that is flanked by outfielder Seth Smith, who paces the team in batting average (.295) and homers (11) and is tied with Chase Headley for the Padres lead with 32 RBI.
The Cardinals take the field after taking care of important business, trading away Joe Kelly and Allen Craig to the Red Sox in exchange for John Lackey.
The Cardinals look to salvage the final game of the series while the Padres look for a home sweep then these teams take the field at Petco Park in San Diego.
