The Phillies have been "frustrated" with the slow progress of talks to send some of their veterans out of Philadelphia by the 4 p.m. MLB non-waver trade deadline, but they may have found a potential partner for outfielder Marlon Byrd.
Phillies Asking For Too Much In Return For Cole Hamels
CBS Sports reports that the New York Yankees have inquired about a possible deal for Byrd as they look for outfield help. The Bronx Bombers have been linked to Byrd and Josh Willingham of the Minnesota Twins while the Texas Rangers' Alex Rios remains off the their radar.
Philadelphia has been looking to start a fire sale at the deadline, but a lot of their demands have caused for teams to back away from making deals. Starting pitcher Cole Hamels has been one of many Phillies on the trading block, but the Phillies' request for four to five top prospects in return have led to many teams believing they won't actually deal him.
Cardinals Interested In David Price
Byrd has been on the trading block along with first baseman Ryan Howard and many other Phillies veterans, and the Yankees, Seattle Mariners and Pittsburgh Pirates have all expressed interest in the outfielder this week.
The Yankees may not pull the trigger on a deal for Byrd due to the fact that he is owed $8 million next season and may not be a good fit for the team.
Byrd, 36 is batting .270/.318/.477 this season with 20 homers and 60 RBI.
The Phillies are looking to deal some of their older players and rebuild, as they currently sit in last place in the National League East, 12.5 games behind the division-leading Washington Nationals and 11 games out of a wild-card spot.
Philadelphia is in danger of enduring its second straight losing season and will likely miss the playoffs for the third year in a row.
The Yankees, meanwhile, are looking to shore up their outfield and starting pitching at the deadline as they sit just three games out of a wild-card spot and in third place in the American League East, 5.5 games behind the first place Baltimore Orioles. The Bombers are preparing themselves for a long race through August and September.
Byrd is in his second stint with the Phillies and has played for seven different teams while making the All-Star team just once in 2010. Byrd has a career .279 batting average with 126 homers and 593 RBI.
