The Dallas Cowboys selected Notre Dame offensive tackle Zack Martin with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, but according to owner Jerry Jones the team almost selected Johnny Manziel.

MRSA Ends Carl Nicks' Career

Jones revealed the Cowboys’ plan on the NFL Network Sunday and finally told the world what they had all expected already.

“I want you to know that almost as I was handing in the card, it was that close to putting that Manziel card in. It was that close. I looked over to my son, Stephen, our chief executive officer, and I said "I took the right pick." ... He was the top player by three players on our board at the time that we were sitting there looking at him.”

There are two ways to look at Jones’ confession. One is to assume that the Cowboys were really considering Manziel at No. 19 overall and wanted him to be Tony Romo’s heir. The more likely way to look at this confession is that Jerry Jones loves the spotlight and wanted the world to remember that the Cowboys exist and they almost made this huge move.

Cleveland "Alarmed" By Johnny Football

The Cowboys eventually made the right decision with Martin and added a player that can fix a need immediately. The Cowboys figure to decline from last year’s 8-8 record as their roster holes have piled up on them. Dallas was home to the NFL’s worst defense in 2013 and it doesn't look to be getting any better in 2014.
