The Detroit Tigers (1-2) are hosting the New York Yankees (1-2) Friday afternoon in their home opener. The Tigers will send Doug Fister to the mound, and he will oppose Yankees' starter Ivan Nova. The game will be broadcast on YES Network, on WCBS 880 AM radio and can be live streamed for free here, or for a fee here.
The Yankees recorded their first win of the season last night at Yankee Stadium, where stalwart left-hander Andy Pettitte tossed eight innings of one-run ball against the Boston Red Sox. He surrendered eight hits and one walk while striking out three.
Mariano Rivera, who missed much of last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, was back in action and recorded his first save of the year, although he gave up a run in the process.
The Yankees offense was powered by light-hitting center fielder Brett Gardner, and equally unheralded catcher Francisco Cervelli, who both homered in the 4-2 victory. Yankee newcomer Lyle Overbay chipped in as well, with a two-run single in the second inning.
The Tigers had a much worse night on Thursday than the Yankees did, falling 8-2 to the Minnesota Twins. Starter Rick Porcello lasted just five and one third innings and gave up three runs, including two home runs. Reliever Bryan Villareal was knocked around in the eighth inning to the tune of five earned runs. He only managed to get two outs in his appearance.
This upcoming three-game set between the Yankees and Tigers will be the first time they meet since Detroit humiliated the Bronx Bombers in an American League Championship Series sweep. During that sweep, Yankees captain Derek Jeter fractured his ankle, and is currently on the disabled list due to complications from that injury. Eduardo Nunez has replaced him in the lineup and in the field.
