The Miami Marlins are reportedly scouting Boston Red Sox pitcher Jake Peavy and could be looking to add him to their rotation prior to the July 31 MLB non-waiver trade deadline.

According to The Boston Globe, the Marlins were among teams that scouted Peavy during his start against the Toronto Blue Jays in which he gave five runs on eight hits while striking out seven in 6.1 innings in a 7-3 loss on Tuesday night.
The San Francisco Giants were also scouting Peavy Tuesday, according to the report, while the Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Royals, San Diego Padres, Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates each had scouts looking at the Red Sox for a variety of players.

The Marlins enter Thursday with a 47-53 record and are in fourth place in the National League East, 8.5 games behind the division-leading Washington Nationals and 7.5 out of wild-card contention.
While the playoffs are a long-shot, Miami is reportedly in the market for a second baseman and a pitcher that is under team control through next season as the deadline approaches.
The Marlins will not move phenom outfielder Giancarlo Stanton or breakout third baseman Casey McGehee, but they are looking into other potential trading chips to offer Boston for Peavy, possibly including Marcell Ozuna.
Peavy signed a two-year $29 million deal prior to the 2013 season, but he does have an option for 2015 that can be picked up.
If the Marlins do make a trade for Peavy, he could be a veteran presence next season when Jose Fernandez returns to the rotation from Tommy John surgery and joins Henderson Alvarez in the promising front-end of the Miami rotation.
The defending World Series champion Red Sox are currently in last place in the American League East, 8.5 games behind the first place Baltimore Orioles and six games out of the final wild-card spot, so they may be sellers come the trade deadline.
There have been multiple reports over the past month that Boston is looking to move Peavy before the deadline after acquiring him at the 2013 trade deadline from the Chicago White Sox.
Peavy has struggled this season, posting a 1-9 record with a 4.72 ERA and 1.427 WHIP.
