Aaron Hernandez's trial date has finally been set-the jury selection process regarding the murder of Odin Lloyd will begin on January 9, 2015 according to reports. The Boston Globe is also reporting that Judge E. Susan Garsh is requesting 1,000 potential jurors brought to the courthouse to fill out questionnaires, 20 times more than the typical number of jurors brought in, and 10 times more than required for a murder case in the last five years in Massachusetts.
Prosecutors have evidence Hernandez's fiancee lied about dumping murder weapon?
In addition to settling the date there are numerous issues still left to be hammered out, including a request by Hernandez's defense to change the venue of the trial due to the extreme national attention the case is receiving.
Hernandez's defense team has also complained that news organizations live streaming the hearings for the ex-New England Patriots tight end have broadcast private conversations between Hernandez and his lawyers online. According to Supreme Judicial Court rules recording devices are allowed inside the courtroom, however broadcasting "bench and sidebar conferences or confer- ences between counsel and client" isn't permitted.
Hernandez-Bill Belichick texts can be used as evidence?
The ex-NFL star's legal woes extend far beyond this case though. Odin Lloyd's family has filed a wrongful death suit against Hernandez, and he has been charged with two other murders in a 2012 double homicide case. Hernandez is accused of shooting Daniel Abreu and Safiro Furtado after encountering the pair in a nightclub when they bumped into him and spilled his drink.
Prosecutors allege Hernandez waited for them to leave the night club, then drove up next to their vehicle at a red light and fired into it, killing both men.
As a player for the Patriots, Hernandez averaged 58 catches, six touchdowns, and 652 yards a year over three seasons. In the offseason of his arrest for killing Lloyd, Hernandez had signed a five-year extension that included a $12.5 million signing bonus.
