The Cleveland Cavaliers are expected to sign No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins this week despite his name being involved in trade rumors.

The Cavaliers have expressed interest in dealing Wiggins to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Kevin Love, but Cleveland maintains the delay in negotiations has nothing to do with a potential trade. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Cavaliers are merely exploring their options with their limited salary cap space.

“Sources told ESPN.com that the Cavaliers' delay in signing the former Kansas star has nothing to do with the prospect of Wiggins being dealt to the Minnesota Timberwolves as part of Cleveland's ongoing trade discussions for Kevin Love.

The Cavaliers plan to sign No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins to a contract in the coming week, according to sources. The Cavaliers, sources say, are merely exploring options for using their estimated $1.4 million in remaining cap space before signing Wiggins to a contract that will pay him in the neighborhood of $5.5 million as a rookie.”

If and when the No. 1 overall pick signs with Cleveland, he cannot be traded for 30 days according the league rules. Wiggins’ potetial contract has attracted attention due to the fact that the Cavaliers have limited cap room to work with and they still want to add players to the current roster. The Cavaliers have expressed interest in signing free agent Ray Allen, but if the cap shapes out as projected they will only be able to offer him the veteran minimum of $1.4 million.

The Cavaliers next move with Wiggins will tell us a lot about where they see him fitting in for the 2014-15 season as well as the status of any potential trade involving Kevin Love.
