Washington Redskins football games on CBS conceivable could be broadcast without the word "Redskins" being mentioned at all during the entire game.
NFL says "Redskins" not a racial slur
CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus told The Hollywood Reporter that the network's football announcers have the option whether to use the term "Redskins" during their broadcasts.
The use of the "Redskins" moniker has been increasingly criticized in recent times, and a movement is circulating that is trying to force the Washington franchise to change the nickname.
In a question-and-answer piece, The Reporter asks McManus how CBS analysts will address the controversy when the 2014 NFL season begins in the fall.
Washington Redskins' attempt at garnering support for nickname goes horribly wrong
"We haven't talked to them yet," McManus told The Reporter. "Generally speaking, we do not tell our announcers what to say or not say. Up to this point, it has not been a big issue for us. Last year, it was simmering; now it's reaching a hotter level. But we probably will not end up dictating to our announcers whether they say Redskins or don't say Redskins. We leave that up to them and our production team. There are times when something becomes important enough that we talk to them, and between now and the start of football season we'll decide what is the right thing to do."
USA TODAY Sports' For the Win asked readers whether CBS announcers should use the name "Redskins" on air and the readers have responded "yes" by more than a 3-to-1 margin.
