Marella, whose real name is Anthony Carelli, announced at an untelevised live event in Toronto this weekend that he sustained a third neck injury and was hanging up his wrestling boots as a way to avoid further serious damage.

Marella was backstage at Monday Night RAW this week in Montreal, but the WWE didn't have him make another public announcement on its flagship show in regards to his retirement, though the company did post the video of his weekend announcement online.

Foley took to his Facebook page to thank Marella, who is a Canadian but is billed from Italy, for all he has done in the WWE since his debut in 2007.

"I heard that Santino Marella announced last night in Toronto that his in-ring days might be winding down due to another neck injury. If so, I'd like to send out a special thank you," Foley wrote. "Thank you Santino, for making me run upstairs to find the source of my children's huge waves of laughter, to see your dance off with Vladimir Koslov - reminding me what it was I loved about wrestling, at a time when I had briefly stopped watching."

The hardcore legend also shared some of his fondest memories of Marella, including a segment the two did together where Foley's infamous "Mr. Socko" sock puppet met Marella's "Cobra."

"Thank you Santino, for making me jump up from Chris Giordano's couch and cheer you on out loud while watching the 2012 Elimination Chamber," the hardcore legend wrote. "Thank you for giving me one last great in-ring moment when The Sock met The Cobra - a clash for the ages."

Foley then welcomed the fans of the WWE Universe to chime in with their favorite Marella moments on his page.

"Thank you Santino Marella - WWE Universe - you entertaining somanagun!" he wrote. "Feel free to share your favorite Santino moment.' I, for one, will be eagerly awaiting a "Best of Santino" on #WWECountdown."

Marella, 35, won the WWE Intercontinental Championship from the late Umaga in his debut and went on to win the IC title twice, the United States Championship once and the WWE Tag Team Championships once.

Marella was also a finalist at the 2011 Royal Rumble before being eliminated by the eventual winner Alberto Del Rio.

Marella hasn't had a televised announcement regarding his retirement, but it seems his seven-year career is coming to an end. Marella did tease in his announcement in Toronto this weekend that he may continue to have an on-screen role on WWE programming, possibly as a general manager.
