Luis Suarez, whose “Cannibal” nickname is re-surfacing after he bit Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during a World Cup match earlier this week, has a surprising defender after getting banned nine international matches, and four whole months. Chiellini himself has gone on record saying that Suarez’s punishment was too severe.
"I don't have any feelings of joy, revenge or anger towards Suarez for an incident which happened on the field and finished there," Chiellini said via his website. "I'm just angry and disappointed about losing the game. At the moment, my only thoughts are with Luis and his family, because they're faced with a very difficult period."
Suarez won't admit biting Chiellini on purpose
Suarez’s lengthy punishment likely had much to do with his long history of misdeeds on the pitch. He’s twice before been given long suspensions for biting opponents on the pitch during games, and was also booted for eight matches because of his racially-tinged abuse of an opposing player in a match. Despite all that, Chiellini insists FIFA came down too hard.
"I always considered the disciplinary measures by the governing organisations to be unequivocal, but at the same time I think what they have proposed is excessive," Chiellini said. "I sincerely hope that he will be permitted at least to be close to his teammates during their games, because forbidding him from doing that would be alienating him."
Could Messi, Neymar, Suarez all be on the same team?
The loss of Suarez is brutal for the Uruguayans, who lost their first match of the World Cup, then got Suarez back for their second match and rode his two goals to a 2-1 victory over England.
