Luis Suarez Biting Incident [VIDEO]: Uruguay Star Suspension Looming After Chomp On Italy's Giorgio Chiellini

Luis Suarez, who last week was being lauded as a hero for his swift return to the pitch from a torn meniscus to lead Uruguay past England with two goals, is back in the headlines for the wrong reasons. Shortly before Uruguay scored their lone goal in a 1-0 win over Italy to advance to the World Cup Round of 16, Suarez was caught on camera biting Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder.

The incident is far from Suarez's first time running afoul of the rules of sportsmanship, and is actually the third time he's been caught biting an opponent. On April 21, 2013 he bit Branislav Ivanović and earned a 10-match ban; two months earlier he had dug his teeth into an opponent as a member of Ajax. Following the incident with Ivanovic, Suarez had tweeted "I'm sad for what happened this afternoon, I apologize Ivanovic and all football world for my inexcusable behavior. I'm so sorry about it!!"

Luis Suarez's multiple biting, racist controversies

Beyond the biting, he has also been suspended previously for verbal, racial abuse of an opponent, Patrice Evra. When the two crossed paths later on Suarez bypassed Evra on a handshake line adding fuel to the fire.

Prior to Tuesday's action rumors had also been swirling of a transfer by Suarez from Liverpool to Barcelona, where he'd play alongside luminaries Lionel Messi and Neymar. That is likely to go out the window though in light of his third instance of violence on the pitch.

It's unclear what the punishment will be from FIFA, but according to ESPN's broadcast team a suspension for the remainder of the World Cup is not out of the question.
