Canelo Alvarez has a major fight looming on June 12 with a slickster by the name of Erislandy Lara, but nobody can stop talking about a potential showdown with Puerto Rican superstar Miguel Cotto.

At a recent Robert Guerrero fight Canelo discussed his Lara fight, as well as the future with Showtime's Brian Kenny. "Without a doubt, that's a huge fight with the fact that he's from Puerto Rico," Alvarez said. "That would be one for the history books for the boxing game alone. Definitely, without a doubt, that's something that people want to see."

Canelo, trainer Chepo Reynoso, plan to punish Lara for disrespect

Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes Alvarez and was acting as his translator for this interview, had previously offered his two cents on the matter, expressing profound excitement at the possibility. "I would love to work with Cotto Promotions on a possible 'Canelo'-Cotto fight," De la Hoya told RingTV.com after Cotto-Martinez. "July 12 is very important toward possibly seeing the pugilistic rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico once again. It would be Salvador [Sanchez] vs. [Wilfredo] Gomez, [Julio Cesar] Chavez Sr. vs [Edwin] Rosario, De la Hoya vs. [Felix] Trinidad. Huge!"

Cotto-Bradley potentially in the works

Canelo must get past Lara though for the fight to retain its luster, and Alvarez knows as much. "So if that were to happen, well, definitely, that would be a huge fight. But at the moment, I've got an obligation pending at the moment and that's Erislandy Lara and that's my primary focus."

If Canelo falls to Lara, Cotto still would have multiple options. He could turn his attention to some more middleweights, possibly challenging knockout artist Gennady "GGG" Golovkin provided he wins on July 26 at Madison Square Garden. Also, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum has raised the possibility of a matchup with Timothy Bradley.

I think a lot of people might want to see a Miguel-Bradley fight," Arum said prior to Cotto-Martinez. "We've made him, I think, a major star. Timothy is a great fighter, a great kid and great in the ring. People want to see him fight, and so there are a lot of big fights out there for Tim. We've made a lot of money and we'll continue to make him a lot of money."
